Women are among the fastest growing segments of the population when it comes to cannabis use, according to data from a survey of users in the San Francisco Bay area of California.
The report by Eaze, a marijuana delivery service, analysed the habits of 4000 people from its 450,000-user database who responded to its questions.
The study indicated that the number of female consumers rose by 38 per cent in 2018 compared to the previous year. In another key sector, Baby Boomers, the rise was more than 25 per cent.
A number of the changes have been attributed to the growth of CBD products creating a broad and diverse market that is differentiated from that of THC users, who are looking for different benefits.
A Gallup poll also shows that two in every three Americans support the federal legalisation of recreational cannabis, up from just over one in 10 in 1969. Those in favour include 71 per cent of Democrats and, perhaps more surprisingly, 53 per cent of Republicans.
Medical marijuana is now legal in 33 US states, with a further 10 having also legalised its recreational use. They include California, Alaska, Oregon, Vermont and Massachusetts as well as the District of Columbia.
